So Nerdy Planet #4
Dear Nerds!
Wow! Your numbers are growing at a speed I was not able to predict. :) I am super grateful for every subscription—it means a world to me!
Today we're gonna speak:
- When Europe seeks for 4-day work week, AI startups are working A LOT!
- AI targets Education
- Is GPT-5 so bad? Or is it actually a win?
1. AI startups' working culture
Okay, you've probably heard that many companies in Europe are experimenting with four-day working weeks. The results of this experiment will vary depending on your point of view, but it seems that we are not far from the moment when some companies will make it their practice.
On the other hand, startups whose evaluation is growing higher than others are integrating an extremely aggressive working pace. I wrote last week about Cognition culture, where they are working 80 working hours weekly:
Cognition has an extreme performance culture, and we’re upfront about this in hiring so there are no surprises later.
We routinely are at the office through the weekend and do some of our best work late into the night.
Many of us literally live where we work.
One of the fastest growing startups in the world - Lovable - and their Co-Founder, Anton Osika, also mentioned their working culture:
ENGINEERS AND BUILDERS WANTED For ambitious technological endeavour.
Long hours, high pace. Candidates must thrive under high urgency under AGI timelines approaching.
Work that will test the limits of your abilities daily
Honour and recognition in case of success. Those seeking comfortable work need not apply.
However, not only are startups working in these extreme conditions. Sergey Brin mentioned that a 60-hour working week is a sweet spot for engineers who are working on AI-related projects.
But even in these examples, there are EXTREME cases. Kennan Davision, CEO of Icon ( they are building tools to create ads using AI ), mentioned in his tweet the requirements for engineers they are hiring:
