So Nerdy Planet #5
Hello Amazing Nerds,
Surprisingly, that was not such a news-heavy week. Well, sometimes the world gives us time to relax a bit.
Today we gonna speak about:
- Meta hiring wars
- Vibe Product Management
- Macrohard Elon Musk problem
1. Meta hiring wars
It seems that Meta has paused its AI hiring spreeāat least, this is what we were told. Is it the end of this, probably historical, blockbuster offers to AI researchers? We will probably see, but a Meta spokesperson says that this is just a simple pause required for a small reorganization: splitting the AI unit into 4 different groups: TBD Labs ( which will be led by ex ScaleAI CEO Alexander Wang ), and three groups which will focus on research, product integration, and infrastructure.
Previously, Meta spent ~ 17 billion USD only on hiring: 2-3 billion on bonuses/salaries/recruitment for AI engineers from different companies, and $14 billion on 49% of ScaleAI. A planned $72 billion will be spent on the company's AI direction in general.
Will Meta restart its hiring spree after restructuring? I believe this question is asked not only by us, who are just waiting for "another big offer to be surprised," but also by the CEOs of companies where AI is one of the most important directions.
Meta is probably one of the most unethical companies in Big Tech. As Elon Musk once said, "Physics is the law; everything else is a recommendation." Zuck will probably say, "If it can be solved by money or a fineāI am fine." Starting from the well-known "Facebook Files" and ending with how Meta is able to make layoffs so quickly in the EU and UK, Meta is always in the mode of saving time -> spending money -> making more money.
